Gelato Fits The Diet Plan, right?
My stacked-heel sandals clattered along the cobblestone streets as my friend and I traipsed about Florence, raving about the life-altering meal we just had.
"I am SO full, Vale! I don't know if I'm going to make it," I laughed, explaining to my dear Italian friend that my stomach was so full I might have to lay down and roll the rest of the way.
"Let's walk for a while," she said, laughing at my predicament.
Half of me just wanted to lay down right there on the moonlit street and take a carb-laden nap. But she inspired me to push on when she pointed out that we were just blocks away from Il Duomo di Firenze, a magnificent domed cathedral whose gothic-inspired architecture towered above the surrounding buildings.
Suddenly, I felt the urge to pick up my pace.
It was the beginning of August, and during the day the heat was almost unbearable. Coming from the dry northern California heat I was accustomed to, it was an especially rude awakening for me. At night, however, the temperatures grew more bearable, making for an incredible walk around the city.
Florence, Venice, Rome, Milan, Amalfi - every region is unique, yet equally beautiful and charming. Last summer I learned first-hand why Italy is known as one of the most romantic countries in the world. Around every corner is a historical masterpiece, begging to be appreciated and admired. Couples, families, and friends all dine at little street-side establishments, feasting on fine Italian fare and table wine until well after midnight.
Something about it, about the country in general, gives me such pleasure. The pace of life is slower, more relaxed. The people are friendly and welcoming. And the food - OH MY GOD, the FOOD! It honestly deserves its own post, but I digress.
That night, as my friend and I admired the beautiful cathedral and enjoyed our leisurely stroll through the city streets, I was reminded of exactly why I chose to travel to Italy. The journey opened my eyes to an entirely different way of life - one that I could certainly get used to. Here are some highlights from my two-week jaunt around Italy, as well as some personal recommendations should you ever choose to embark on a similar path:
